The Fonds Hélène & Édouard Leclerc presents the first retrospective of Henri Cartier-Bresson in Brittany. Curated by Clément Chéroux, director of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, this exhibition of nearly 300 works, from the most famous to the lesser-known, is an invitation to (re)discover the artist.
Being the most admired photographer of this time, he was himself photographed by the many professionals and amateurs who crossed his path. More than twenty of those portraits punctuate the sections of this exhibition, clearly demonstrating that there was not one but several Henri Cartier-Bresson. The young man who travelled the world in the 1930s was not the man who joined the communists at the end of the decade. After the Second World War, in 1947, it was yet another man who founded the Magnum Photos agency. Following the story of this multifaceted gaze, the FHEL exhibition is also a journey through the 20th century.
