Henri Cartier-Bresson met the young painter Sam Szafran in 1972. Progressively leaving his Leica in favour of pencils, Henri asked Sam to be his drawing teacher. There followed frequent exchanges and meetings between them and their families. Henri Cartier-Bresson regularly gave his “intense friend” carefully selected prints. After the passing of the photographer in 2004, the Szafran family decided to offer this collection to Léonard and the Pierre Gianadda Foundation, as a tribute to the friendship that had brought them together.
Organised with the collaboration of the Fondation HCB, this exhibition highlights major works, chosen from among the many travel photographs and portraits of artists.
