Limbo opens with an image that could have introduced a different story: that of a late afternoon on a sunny beach. However, followed by the X-ray of a damaged spine, it actually tells the personal, therapeutic, story of photographer Sergio Castañeira who, as a result of a diving accident, lost the use of his legs and of one of his hands, and was left in a wheelchair.
For almost five years, he resided in a physiotherapy center, where he resumed his photography practice. Physically constrained, the first-person narrative shifts the angle of the shots, revealing a gaze that is too rarely represented in photography.
Published by Ediciones Anómalas, Limbo is the third book by Spanish photographer Sergio Castañeira.
