Photographer Ulf Lundin grew up in Sweden. As a child, he envied a classmate whose boldness and maturity he admired. As an adult, he began a series of paparazzi-like photographs of his former friend, now married with two children. With the family’s consent, but without them knowing when the photographer was present, Ulf Lundin spent the year 1996 capturing, from a distance and in hiding, moments of a life very different from his own, oscillating between envy and repulsion.
Pictures of a family was shown several times around the world before being published by Skreid Publishing in 2024.
With this existential series, Ulf Lundin questions what determines our life choices. “Under other circumstances, he could have been me and I him”, he says. “Do I want the life I had, or did I want something else? Could I have chosen something else? Had I even made a conscious choice?”
