After his highly acclaimed first book, The Flood (Void, 2021), Italian photographer Francesco Merlini (b. 1986) is back with an equally convincing opus: Better in the Dark than His Rider. The book, designed by Francesca Todde and the author himself, is published by the Milan-based publisher Départ pour l’image. Highly inspired by 19th-century scientific manuals, the book brings together some 50 photographs reminiscent of mental representations or daydream images. These photographs, explains Luca Reffo in his afterword, “reveal the unique point of view of someone who, like a sleepwalker guided by ghosts, is looking for something that has no name”.
