Portraits in Life and Death is the only book of photographs published by Peter Hujar during his lifetime. The twenty-nine portraits of creators from William Burroughs, Susan Sontag and John Waters to Larry Ree possess a haunting beauty and a degree of psychological examination that is both offbeat and fascinating. The portraits are followed by eleven images that can only be described as devastating: photographs of the clothed, semi-conserved bodies of 19th-century Sicilians discovered in the barren catacombs beneath a church in Palermo.
