In 2002, during the civil war, Hady Barry and her family fled Côte d’Ivoire to Senegal. Shortly thereafter, her mother left for the United States to seek asylum, leaving thirteen-year-old Barry to care for her three younger siblings while her father was often absent due to work commitments. In i am (not) your mother, Barry confronts the trauma of her teenage years and its impact on her relationship with her mother. The book is an attempt to address the complex feelings she has towards her mother, an unstable mix of grief, resentment, admiration, and love. The work combines documentary photography, family archive images, diary extracts, and transcriptions of the artist’s conversations with her mother.
The conversation with Hady Barry about i am (not) your mother (self-published with the support of the Penumbra Foundation, 2024) will be followed by a signing session.
Meeting in French.
